Portugal to Croatia
106.7 degrees!
Up early at 5:30 am to head out for our flight to Zagreb, Croatia! Cruising the Dalmatian coast has been top of my bucket list for over 20 years and I can't wait to hit it! First to get out of Portugal. We showed up to the security stand and there was only one officer for everyone! Grateful we were towards the front of the line. Turned out that they went on strike. We finally got through and then saw the line for the people coming into Portugal. It was so long and no one moving. People were sitting and laying on the floor in line. We felt so bad for them.
Landed and had our first interaction with Croatian people, customs. She was not messing around and kind of scary. Did our usual, get money, get car and get on the road. It is wicked hot here, 106.7! Headed to the Museum of Broken Relationships. Thoughts were to park, eat and check out the museum. It is a ghost town. There is only one restaurant open and fully booked. Was going to have to wait 30 minutes for the museum and with everyone hungry and hot we opted to head out. Back in the car and searching for a place to eat. Nothing is open and then the golden arches appear! Not wanting Mcdonald's but going on 10.5 hours of being awake with only a little snack we caved and went. P.S. they charge for ketchup and they have chilli peppers in their nuggets.
2 3/4 hours to Pula. Can't even count how many tunnels we went through to get here. Beautiful, green rolling hills and mountains. As we pull into Pula you can't miss the Roman coliseum on one side and the mega yachts in the marina on the other.
Our Airbnb host meets us at the gate. As we pull in we realized why they didn't show the outside of the building in the Airbnb post, very cold war/Eastern Block feeling. Was feeling like it is pretty sketch. He escorted us up, we looked over from the front door and saw the Roman Coliseum and when he opened the door we totally forgot what the outside looked like. It was really nice with an absolutely gorgeous view of the marina. Plus a bottle of champaign was waiting for us in the fridge. What's not to love about this place?!
Kids were tired so Andy and I walked a couple of blocks and found a street full of restaurants that were alive with lots of people and outdoor seating. This country is the flip of Portugal. No one is wearing a mask or keeping social distance. Has me totally freaked out. The evening stroll could be amazing, but the concern and stress over Covid does not make it as enjoyable. We are trying to pick less crowded areas and streets to walk.
