Unawatuna

December 11, 2018

Did not sleep well.  I finally found our information packet we made on Sri Lanka.  We never really highlight anything in the packets, but this one had a highlighted sentence. It says  it is important to wear bug repellent due to dengue fever.  Hudson has over 30 bites now and I am worried so I didn't sleep well.
A beautiful stand along the drive.

Headed out this morning to Unawatuna.  On the way we went to the blow hole at In Kudawella. Drove deep into the neighborhood then  we had to park and walk in about 1/4 of a mile. I was uneasy with the walk.  Not because of the people but the path.  Dog poop, stray dogs, lot of flies, very uneven dirt/rock surface and the random surenge. There were a few dried fish stalls selling to the locals which made for quiet the smell with the heat.     I don't want to be a 5 star kind of traveler and feel like I can take it for a few days, but I am ready to move on.  The people are lovely and it is beautiful though.

Our driver Upul pulled over and bought the car a round of coconuts! A sweet gesture by him.  Here is a picture of him.

Another hour down the road we saw the stick fisherman.  So amazing that they sit up there for  hours. I can't even imagine getting up there to begin with.

Checked into our place Sun'n'Sea.

It is right on the water.  Since we didn't have breakfast everyone was starving.  we ate at our hotel.  Everything was so good and we devoured it.  We had chicken curry, noodles with chicken, calamari, prawns, french fries, seafood pasta and pizza! The place seems clean so that made me happy.

Checked out Fort Galle.  It is a fort built by the Dutch.  There is an entire working community within the walls of the fort.  The owner of the hotel said it is the only working fort left in the world - no idea if that is true. We walked  the perimeter of the fort at sunset and ended at the lighthouse.  Strolled the streets and finished with an italian dinner.

Trying to go to sleep but the waves were loud then suddenly I heard a loud siren.  I was certain it was a tsunami warning after all the talk of one,  it got in my heard.  Chatted with Michele a bit who took my mind off of it and to bed I went.
