Seattle to Santorini, Greece
September 12, 2024
Off to the airport at a very civilized hour of 10:15 am for
our 12:25 pm flight. Turkish Airlines made us check our roller bags through to
Athens. Lady at the desk asked if we would like to but really wasn’t asking. A
weird feeling since we never check bags. The plane was really nice and we scored with a
row to ourselves and as soon as they locked the door Andy grabbed another row
of three. Food was ok. Great having the extra room especially at coach
prices. The woman behind Cindy accused here of stealing money. Super odd,
insistent and awkward conversation! We were happy to be away once the plane
landed. While stretching in the back I found an attendant who enjoyed chatting
and working on her English. She said everything is so expensive in Turkey
because it is hard to get things into the country while there is a war going on
near it. Only can afford to eat an egg maybe three times a week. Sad to hear.
We had a 3 hour layover in Istanbul. Had one of the top three burgers ever! A
place called Salt Bae. There are about five of them in the world, all in very
cool places like Dubai, London and Beverly Hills. I noticed everyone ate their
food with black gloves. They serve them to you on the plate. Not sure if this
is to keep your hands clean or help prevent germs since you are traveling but
it was tasty! Found a little spot to shut our eyes for about 30 minutes which
as much needed. A quick 90 minutes to Athens. Then we made our way through a
very chaotic, hot Athens airport. We were fast and made it to the desk with an
earlier flight to Santorini but they were not flexible and wouldn't let us
board. We waited for our flight in a very crowed and did I mention hot waiting
area. Our flight was delayed over 90 minutes due to big winds. Finally bussed
out to the plane were we loaded and off we went. The flight was quick, lots of
wind, a very hard landing where everyone clapped not sure if it was because we
survived the landing or because the captain was able to land the plane is such
high winds. We then quickly realized we were at the end of the landing strip.
Yikes! $35 taxi ride to our hotel Revere. Our taxi driver was great and talked
about the island in the off season and how things are very safe, and you don’t
need to worry about your valuables.

September 13, 2024
We had been traveling for 30 hours, were very hungry and
tired and just wanted to go grab dinner and sleep but our host had different
plans. They immediately served us a tasty shot of their local alcohol mixed in
with a bit of honey, cinnamon and orange, VERY tasty. Finally made it to dinner
where we had such a fun, sweet waiter. He greeted us with more shots! He
insisted on surprising us with two appetizers. Both were basically a boat load
of melted cheese, and he then surprised us with dinner which was more cheese,
eggplant and some pork chunks. It was a nice start to the trip and went from
empty to full. Our hotel is in Fira. It is connected to a walkway that takes
you along an area of restaurants and shops from our hotel into the center of
town and is only pedestrian and overlooks the ocean. It is gorgeous and full of
life! I love it. Crashed for a much needed night of sleep.
Santorini, Greece
September 14, 2024
Up early (5:00 am) and planning the day. Andy is off
to do a 6 mile walk from Fira to Oia where there are beautiful views and to
watch the sunrise. I'm also off to watch the sun rise but way more local.
Taking a stroll into town. As the sun rises the church bell rings. So beautiful
and what a way to start the day. Nothing is open at 7:00 and then I see a bunch
of locals hanging out. It is a bakery that is open and has amazing things and
welcoming locals! From the walk Andy found a little town about halfway with
some lovely places overlooking the water near Tavos Tavern. On the list for the
next time we are back.
Connected back with Andy and we have breakfast delivered
from our hosts and then grabbed a car rental and off to explore. The streets
are very narrow and like most countries people walk right alongside of the road
with no fear. We went to Oia area and parked. There are free shuttles that take
you down to Ammoudi Beach. You can also walk it but it is so steep and so hot I
can't imagine. This appears to be home to local fishing boats and some
restaurants built over the water. So much wind here and big water splashing
over the restaurant walls make you ready to cover your meal as the water
splashes over. We opted for a table right on the edge even though the waitress
warned us that they would not replace our food if it got wet. We had the
most amazing calamari, a white fish spread and Greek salad. It was not a ton of
food, but it felt like we ate for hours. I'm not sure why. It was one of the
most special settings we have ever been.
Off to explore the white buildings and just a few blue roofs
(I imagined there would be a ton) of Oia. The town sits on top of the hill
overlooking the ocean. Lots of charming allies, beautiful flowers, little shops
and restaurants all that take advantage of the view. Go here as early as
possible because it can get crowed and very hot. Can't even imagine coming to
Greece in the summer. It is around 80 degrees and almost too much to take.
Super tired and went to the Winery - a quick stop to rest. The wine was meh.
Kamari- super cool, laid back beach town. I would certainly stay here if we came back.
Paralia Beach: Black sand beach with lots of cool beach clubs
Fira: PK for sunset. Lots of wind here and as a girl was
posing for a picture her dress flew up and everyone clapped lol! Many people
trying to capture that shot over the caldera to make friends jealous or post on
their social media pages. Walked into the center and ate at Lucky’s for gyros $4 each and sat in park in
the center of town and enjoyed them. On the stroll back I got a cute bracelet
from a leather shop that I love. It has blue in it which reminds me of
Santorini.
Santorini to Paros
September 15, 2024
Up at 3:30am and off to Kamari to watch the sunrise at 7,
church bells again as the sun came up. sat on chairs to enjoy. Bakery stop along
the way to tide us till we can eat again. It was a great spot with the locals
starting the day. The shop owner was very kind and chatted with us about this
and that. Andy clipped a curb with the
rental car requiring some surgery to make things look ok for return. Thankfully
Cindy took good video of the condition when we received it and it turns our
someone else had done the visible damage.
Down the steep winding road to the Port and caught the ferry,
30 minutes late, crazy boarding and kicked out of club class. yucky boat. Lumpy.
Super challenging to board. Andy took my bag and with the big seas the boat was
rocking hard as you try to board with a wimpy, rope rail. The employees try to
grab your hand and pull you up and hopefully not over.
Paros car Vasilis - shared insight and help about being kind
and not stealing
Driving is confusing and no straight roads in Greece. Paros
definitely has more greenery.
Villa Isabella - Naoussa is a charming place to stay. Lovely
host, amazing breakfast, a perfect view over the mega yachts in the bay and
very nice walkable location to town.
However, there are some major stairs to go up and down each time since
it is built on the side of a hill. It’s
not that there is a lot of them, but they are very steep and big, vertical
steps.
Moschonas Restaurant: Lovely lunch along the water’s edge,
perfect calamari, tables we also placed on boats, pork souvlaki, lamb chops,
and grandma in kitchen cooking away. Best meal so far! Looking back on the
reviews it shouldn’t have been so good.
2 hour nap
Headed into Santa Maria for another nap on beach. Thought to
be a best beach in Paros. Fun place to watch the sun go down and group of
yachties swim in from their charter.
Katsoynas: There was a sign about home cooking, so we
checked it out. Family ran with what looked like mom and dad cooking, kids
waiting tables and grandma brought me bug spray. Lovely meal in a very Greek
feeling place.
Walked around town (Sunday is supposed to be best night)
Great energy and life. live music, water fight with the local teenagers where
they filled up big water bottles and threw them into the air at each other and
water sprayed out. It’s fun to see them so happy!
Exploring Paros
September 16, 2024
Still getting up early. Enjoyed our patio with the view of
the harbor and seeing the sun creep over the bay as it rises at 7:00 am. Andy
was a hero and ran down to the bakery to get us some fresh hot croissants.
Going to the bakery is one thing, but going up all the stairs on the way back
is the real hero stuff. So many and they are double in size. Our host Joanna
made us a great breakfast with the most perfect scrambled eggs. I asked her how
they make them, and she said slow and low basically. For the first time in my
life I liked the Greek yogurt. It didn't have the sour taste that it has
back home.
Out to explore. We drove by at least 5 beaches exploring the
Island and finally settled on one, Andy
now calls it Cloudy Beach because the clouds keep coming and hanging in this
one area.
I am a little nervous about this beach because as we walked
up to look at it, there are signs that say big waves come from the ships that
pass by. Of course, this is no concern of Andy‘s. We inflate our tubes that
were carried from Seattle and in the water we go. The water is perfect, blue,
warm, and the areas gorgeous. Sitting here watching everybody apply mud to
their bodies. I guess it is really beneficial to take the mud from the clay put
it on your body while it dries in the sun and rinse it off. Super tenacious to
get off. We will give this a try. After
a good two hour float and giant waves, we decided to get out. I would guess
about 30 seconds after we got out some giant waves from a fairy that we saw go
by in the distance, came and dumped just about everybody and their stuff on the
beach. Crazy how it went from calm to crashing instantly. Well, I had Director
from Andy to hang onto him tight, he held onto me and all our stuff. And he would say this is him saving my life
once again! 😆 well I was fearing for my life Andy admitted
all he could think of was how fun it would be to jump in the water and ride the
waves, of course! After we survive that we walked over to the clay cliffs and I
definitely had my eye more on the water this time. We dug clay mixed with water
from the cliffs and smeared it all over our bodies. as we are waiting for the
sun to do its work on the clay can’t help but notice all the naked people and
how relaxed they are in their skin. Back in the water to rinse it all off. Our
skin was so soft. I can see why everyone is doing this.
Heading now to a little local place. When I say a little
there are no tables in the restaurant, they are across the street and it is a
park setting with pine trees and park benches. However, they set up about five
tables under the trees amongst the benches where people enjoy their meals. You
must order the Greek salad here. It is six dollars and could easily feed 4 to 6
people. They start the meal by bringing you a complementary hard-boiled egg and
a hunk of feta cheese, which is all kind of interesting. We ordered the mixed
platter for two and the waiter told Andy he was going to bring him his favorite
beer which she did. It’s called nymph and was so good! Unfortunately, that was
the only time we found it despite looking everywhere. Everything here was
amazing! We enjoyed our mix of pork and chicken and two different types of
sausages and beef. It had a seasoning on it that I put my finger on but tasted
amazing. At the end of the meal after boxing up the rest of our giant salad
they brought us out complementary chocolate dipped ice cream on a stick. The
whole meal with a giant water two beers, one of which was on the house the
salad, and the mix grill was €30. The staff were so kind the food was amazing
and the setting was charming. We crossed the street went inside to pay our bill
and he started speaking with the chef who, of course is right there because
it’s so small and he was lovely. He made me a big bag of spices that they use
to take home. I asked him what was in it, and he said at least 30 different
spices. Can’t wait to take it home and share it with friends and family.
We drove through some Hilltown and then back to the first
beach. We explored the day that we had the most beautiful setting. It’s around
five in the evening now the sun is a little lower, and the cliffs are a little
more gold. No signs here for giant waves from boats so going to relax a bit
more. It seems as though many people came just to take a sunset dip. We went
out and just waited and swim in the water. It was beautiful, refreshing and
special all in one.
Back to the room. We sat on our patio overlooking the bay
and watched all the yachts come in at the end of the day and set anchor.
Definitely some money here! Had a quick shower and then we went to dinner. It’s
a restaurant that was recommended by our host and right on the water’s edge. If
it wasn’t for the fact that we had a reservation, I don’t think we would’ve
gone. We were so full from our giant lunch. We ordered something small in the
views and walked the winding pathways through town and to the marina for a
quick tour before we headed up to the room.
Alika Paros, Greece
September 17, 2024
Continuing to wake up early, but it has its perks. Sitting
on our patio overlooking the water and watching all the beautiful yachts leave
for the day or seeing the ones that snuck in late at night. We are off to a
Alika today. A chartered a small boat and have the most beautiful day of
weather for it. First, we grabbed a little breakfast at a restaurant right on
the water’s edge. The prices continue to amaze me. They gave us each at least a
3 egg omelet filled with stuff and they were nine euros each. The coast is pretty,
and the water is blue blue! Areas feel like a bottle of blue paint was just
opened up into it. Today we are exploring Anti Paros and the coast of
Paros. There’s a cool tunnel that you
can swim through with an opening on the other end which we set anchor and did.
After a good swim and a couple of hours of cruising Andy was my hero and
dropped me off at a small dock and he went and set anchor and swim into the
restaurant. It was a cute little restaurant right along the water and I got my
fix of calamari and Andy had his octopus.
We keep having to remind ourselves that we’re in Greece because it just
feels so surreal. A little bit further, and there were ruins that you could see
from the water, a good reminder of all the history here. Many gorgeous coves!
One of our last coves was Pirate Cove where Andy swam into shore and quickly
learned it was a clothing optional beach 😆 a quick 20 minute
cruise up and we got to see the port of anti-Perros charming to see, but just
as cute as the other so don’t know that I would make the effort to go to this
one again. It was fun to see the big yachts though. Seems like there are
catamaran everywhere. made our way back to our port and returned our boat and
they gave us a bottle of homemade wine. Hospitality here has been amazing. Sit
at Waters edge and had a nice beer before we headed home. The town is cute and
just can’t get over all the restaurants in every town that are right along the water’s
edge. Love all the options.
The sunsets here around 715 and on our drive home we happened
to turn up just the right road and found a lookout overlooking the sea and
watched the most beautiful sunset! Continued home where there are bakeries
everywhere but won’t happen to catch my eye. We went in and lucky for me. It
was owned by a chocolate lover! They had so many options of all the traditional
Greek desserts, and amazing chocolates. About way too many and then headed to
street grillers where we had a bunch of different souvlakis all of which are
served with pita bread and french fries. My two pork kbobs and one chicken
along with a box full of french fries pita bread and Tzatziki was a whopping
eight dollars. Still can’t believe the prices we made it back to Villa.
Isabella sat on our deck overlooking the water and enjoyed our dinner and of
course dessert. A great end to a perfect day!
Paros to Milos, Greece
September 18, 2024
We woke up and had a wonderful casual morning with breakfast
on our patio made by Joanna. We went off to see rock beach club, which is a
simple 10 minute drive and a really special place. Two beds an umbrella, two
bottles of water two towels, front row chairs for only €30 each. The water was
crystal blue and the beach beautiful and clean. I love that there is a doorbell
like a button on the umbrella push it whenever you want Service! We had a nice
lunch and Aperol spritz. We are at the beach club for about six hours because
one, it was beautiful and why not and two, waiting for our ferry tonight which
is now been delayed to seven at night.
I’ve read so many times that the ferries are super chaotic and they getting on and getting off in the luggage is the craziest thing people I’ve seen but really it kind of feels like home to me. Definite sit on the top level of the ferries because it is the club priority because the seats are much nicer. If yet to have a window, which is kind of sad but not a big deal either.
25 minute car ride over to our area of the island AppolonIa. It is a much, much smaller quieter area than where we just came from at the port, but still restaurants and shops and very cute.
Just checked into Appolon rooms. It’s about a 10 minute walk from Town and set right on the water’s edge. They have a great bar that looks really cute. However, at 10:30 at night. Din is the number one priority! We walk into town and found a great pizza place, open restaurant with fire pizza and a nice vibe. A great pizza and a stroll back and crashed.
Milos, Greece
September 19, 2024
We stayed up late and slept late. It was nice to have a
start around 8 AM. Not ready and headed into town for breakfast at a place
called Dom. Had savory pancakes with what looked like Velveeta cheese and eggs
and ham thought it would be fine. Turned out to be a bad idea. Stepped into a
cute little bakery, of course we bought a little something and off to look at
beautiful beaches for the day. first stop was what we call moon Beach. It looks
like you’re walking on the moon. A lot of people did not feel crazy busy. That
is cool, tunnels built into the side of the mountains, which I’m not sure what
they used for but they’re really cool. Bike up to the car and wound around and
round into the mountains up and over, there’s no straight road in Greece. Made
our way down into this cute little fishing village with about six buildings
right on the water’s edge. Super cute
and charming. I bet it was amazing back in the day of a full on working village.
Next beach we found was perfect! Two beds and an umbrella and a beautiful view
on a gorgeous beach for €25. And most importantly out of the wind, After
spending the day here we headed back on a slightly different route, which was
not quite as terrifying as the route here. A quick drink at our beach bar, a
shower, and walk to see the sunset. I keep feeling like we get skunked on the
sunsets here. It was OK but nothing special. Walked into town and had a nice
dinner at a little restaurant right on the beach. Calamari, Taziki, zucchini,
chips, and Andy finally had some nice fish. Top the night off with gelato and
back in our room.
Milos, Greece
Boat Day!
September 20, 2024
Off to charter boat today. After a quick check out, we were
off to explore. There are gorgeous beaches here. Lots of arcs we saw a 265 foot
boat. We drove around it and got to see it up close and felt extremely small.
The water is a beautiful blue and we made our way to at least six different
stops. We saw the famous blank beach where you have to go down a narrow gully
and down a very steep slanted crooked ladder that looks poorly constructed.
People were high-fiving each other when they made it down alive. Super fun to watch them come down. But no
thank you. Renting a small boat to tour the islands was a real win.
After we made our way to lunch at O Hamos. Beautiful patio,
covered with vines and bamboo above to give you great shade as you look out
over the beach. The unique thing about this restaurant was the menu is written
in six different languages and each menu is written by hand. I finally had
beef! They had these really yummy meatballs there.
Finished off the day with dinner in town at a pretty
restaurant where the tables are right on the beach. Always seems to be a
beautiful setting here.
Milos, Greece
September 21, 2024
Started the morning out with a lazy morning after hitting it
hard. Then breakfast at the bakery, Kivotos Ton Gefsean, and got an amazing
baklava and rice pudding. They had a great backyard, courtyard area covered
with vines and trees and kind of the perfect setting for Grace. Made our way to
the beach where it was hot! We went on the south side to avoid all of the wind.
Went to a beautiful spot for lunch right on the water’s edge overlooking the
sea with expensive views it was Astakas and from there right next-door, you
could walk to Clima the adorable fishing village. I think you can Airbnb some
of them, but we were able to see a family living and there’s and how they just
open the door to the world and the most gorgeous view and they were just
hanging out watching TV, we drove through an adorable hillside town and the
entire thing is built on the side of a cliff kind of scary kind of gorgeous all
in one. Parked the car and hiked into the amphitheater but one time held 800
people. Looks like they’re still excavating it. drove back down stopped at a
great gyro place called Psitolatria. We
had the biggest euro we’ve ever had and a whole Nother entrée of chicken and
french fries two cokes and the whole bill came to $20 but the giant hero was
only $4.50 euros. finished the evening at our place and just relaxed and took
it easy before our big day tomorrow and heading to Athens.
Milos to Athens, Greece
September 22, 2024
Up early and stopped by our favorite bakery in town. Many
treats later and relaxing time in the courtyard we headed to the south end of
the island. The winds were kicking up around 20 knots from the north that would be
protected. We had a wonderful float. Andy used his nutty skills and grabbed a
big rock and a line and used it as an anchor for us while we floated. Everybody
on the beach watched just waiting for us to crash. We were successful and
disappointed them all. Tried to take a nap on the beach after Andy created an
umbrella out of my Serang, but with the winds gusting, we had more of a face of
sand than a relaxing nap. Back to our hotel, Appolon and use the pool and had a
nice drink at the bar. Perfect ending because we were able to use their shower
and change as well. Shared Burger, which was very disappointing and the woman
at the table next to us look like Keith Richards from the stones and they kept
playing the stones on the radio, so it was kind of fun for that. Major smoker
and her and Keith have a lot in common! We
drove into Port and dropped our car off a quick little shop for a couple things
and now enjoying gelato Seaside waiting for our boat to come in. Kind of
perfect way to wrap up Milos. Everyone that we’ve met along the way today has
been talking about how horrific their words not ours. The ferry ride is so , we
try to not eat too much clothes we didn’t mind getting barf on and have
earplugs handy to shove in our nose horrible smell about. Fortunately, it looks
like the wind calm down and we’re hoping for the best.
Athens, Greece
September 23, 2024
Definitely settling into a more local time zone. Really
enjoying our hotel, A for Athens and the location is perfect. We woke up at
eight and went to our rooftop restaurant for breakfast overlooking the
Acropolis another beautiful day here in the Mediterranean and on the hot side
for us at 80°. Off to see the acropolis up, which felt like a much bigger hill
just because of the heat, we got at 9 AM.
Wondered our way back down through their garden, which is
very similar in my mind to central Park being a beautiful garden in the middle
of a big city. Offered some nice shade and peace and quiet. Midway through a quaint
street that I don’t know the name of but loved it. Seem to have many locals on
it, filled with restaurants and shops and seeing people hug each other. Saw the
temple of Zeus and made our way to the public market. Always love a market, but
don’t think this was one that I would even recommend visiting. No fresh fruits
and vegetables. But we found a cute little restaurant in the alley of the
market and had an amazing lunch. And had Fish said it’s the best fish she ever had,
and he shared and I would agree. Sat next to some dude with the hog necklace
tooth thing. Kind crazy but also unique to talk to him. It’s been a hard day
and wondering back to our room we sat down at a nice little café and had some
homemade gelato and watched the world go by. Back in the room around five for a
little rest headed up to our rooftop bar at Sunset for a nice drink. I have to
do some more exploring and went through the local market of wears as they would
say, but really it’s a lot of choice stuff and still a lot of fun to look at,
one block off of that area where you can stroll restaurants they’re all
adorable. And had a little snack and continued with the adventure for the
night. Made our way to Little Kooks, a crazy dessert place. You can see it a
block to two away with all the lights. They have different themes and right now
is decorated for Halloween. So impressed with the decorations! We went to a
little neighborhood, Pisiri which is known to be more local. Love all the cafés
and bars and restaurants. Many of them have local music and we found a cute
little table to watch from. The music plays on the corner of the restaurant .
People get up and dance and clap when they fill it, the few scooters zig in and
out to miss the dancers. Love the music, the dancing, and what appears to be
the love of living life. Definitely a different vibe here in Athens versus the
islands. Not way more hyped up, but do love the relaxing vibe and beauty of the
islands.
Athens, Greece
September 24, 2024
Last Day in Greece!
Sept 24 Athens to Krakow Poland
A little bit of a leisurely morning then we went up to a
rooftop to have our final breakfast overlooking the acropolis. Checked our bags
and started to wander the streets. Joanna from Villa Isabella suggested a cute
neighborhood. We went through the streets and there’s a adorable restaurants
and cafés feels like a real part of Athens. Made our way over to the Olympic
Stadium, which is kind of breathtaking in a really hot temperature kind of.
Time for a little downtime and to cool off and rest the
feet. Wen had some chicken lemon soup and Andy had yet again another Greek
salad. It is a perfect location lots of people around lots of people watching
and a fun atmosphere. Love sitting on the side of the street and cute little
tables. Then we headed up to the Annafiotika neighborhood, which is at the base
of the acropolis. We had a lovely dinner at the Psaras Tavern. The
waiter promised Andy the best lamb and all of Greece and he delivered. It was
truly amazing and flavorful so tender. I had the basic pork chop and yeti and
french fries. The neighborhood was adorable. It was at the steep steps right at
the base of the acropolis, adorable little restaurants, and cute homes. Did not
feel like Athens felt like you were a cute little village of
Grease.
About an hour’s drive to the airport and we waited to board
Ryan Air. Unfortunately, it was about an hour late and we got to hang out in
the stinky hot, sweaty Athen’s airport… Again. Finally see the plane and
everybody was getting off and then before we knew it she opened the doors and
said priority boarding and his polite voice, and then everybody bombarded the
door and just went for it. We were at the front of the line, and we walked the rickety
little stairs to get onto the plane. I got lucky and Andy carried my bag for me
which I desperately needed and appreciated. It was crammed packed and everybody
had to get on as quickly as possible because we had 12 minutes to get loaded
and take off. Otherwise announced we could be there from anywhere for a few
more minutes or up to about three or so hours, that was definitely an incentive
for many of us, but the ones that didn’t hear the announcement didn’t seem to
be all that concerned. The seats were barely seats, it was hot, it was frustrating
watching everybody and all the confusion trying to load. More suitcases than
slots available. Grateful that we landed two hours later.
