Pacific Beach, CA

January 2024

Loved the Crystal Pier, could come here once a year. Andy had business during two of the days and we stayed a total of four nights which was magical because we could really settle in.  Missed cooking out on the grill. Walking the strand to breakfast was perfect. Everyone seems so chill. Rebooked for 2025. Need to think about what time of year is best. With the exception of the 15 coolege kids packed into a cottage across the way for booze fest we are the youngest people here. Fun to see the XL surf. Frozen guacamole, labeled as fresh is a lie and not very good.

Had the dream of buying a getaway place until we learned the price point.

Love how we can walk to everything.  We walked to dinner at Enoteca Adriano. A cute Italian restaurant. Sat us outside at a table and realized there was a movie about to start on the wall that was set in Italy.  Such a fun touch! Dinner was fantastic! Started with the house specialty of Enoteca Adriano, fresh burrata with prosciutto, fig jam, arugula and crostini.  My mouth is watering for it again.  Don’t miss the Orecchiette Bosco, just the best!

Grass Skirt and Captain’s Quarters are new favorites for a drink. Both really cool speakeasy bars.  Flavored gin and tonic on tap is something we should try.

Great night with Don and Lori at the Chart House. Cindy made quite the big deal about how wonderful a person Don is and made Andy jealous in the process.

Fun reconnecting with Suzie and Jay. Old stories about crazy times started to come out about things Cindy would never condone for her daughter or son. Bus to Tijuana, wawhat?

Everyday we could somehow justify that we walked enough that we could finish the night off with an ice cream from Handles.  So good!

Some drama with the flights on the heels of Alaska planes having panels blow off mid air. We just Tightened our belts and traveled without issue. LOL!

A wonderful time and can’t wait to go back!

Maui, Hawaii

December 2023

$232 to Maui over Christmas??? No way, well it’s out of Vancouver, team says let’s go! Not the first trip to kick off with cheap flights and certainly not the last.

The day after the kids finished school we drop puppers off and head to Vancouver. Edalines for ice cream ahead of the border and we sail across. We are at the Blue Horizon Hotel, our favorite for the night before our flight. Great location and jumping off point for walking Robson Street with all the bundled up locals.

News to us after many stays is they have a pool. There was Poutine, Montreal meat sandwich and Doner’s for dinner, but unfortunately, we missed Nat’s for pizza this time. Since it was the holidays, we headed to Stanley Park for Christmas lights. Fire Departments from the greater Vancouver area set up their displays to raise money for burn victims. The lights are really well done with all the favorite holiday characters and things flow together as a reasonably well thought out hodge podge of merriment.

We were packed into a two queens hotel room and managed to sleep fairly well. Breakfast was eggs benny which for us has always been substandard in Vancouver. This time was no exception. Cindy could make a mint with her version in this town. Out of our room we headed to Granville Island. The drive over was packed with high end exotic cars for Hudson and we parked a bit out which provided a nice walk to the market. We noshed and shopped our way through and picked up enough for a snack on the plane. We prebooked our long term parking at the airport. It was easy, affordable, no stress and a light rail takes you to the airport.

WestJet was a new carrier for us and we were wondering if we were getting on the Canadian version of Spirit given the price. It was actually very nice and up to snuff with the best of the US airlines we fly. We rented our car from Makoa Rental Car, a local company, which was a great experience and one we will do again. They were great on the phone, there was no counter and no line. We just walked to the vehicle, extracted the key from a lock box and drove off. The only caveat, it’s a later model car with some more miles and a few more dings than you would get at Avis. We stayed at Kanai A Nalu…again which is in Maalaea. It’s typically on the lower cost side, in the middle of everywhere we like to go and right on the ocean with snorkeling and surfing out front. That said Maui at Christmas is painfully expensive lodging wise.

We started talking with some Husky alumni's and explained we were going to go get Christmas lights since we were missing them at home.  They were kind enough to loan us some which quickly went up in the condo and around the rail of our patio. Loved that the condo's put lights up on a number of trees on the grounds and around the pool!

We grabbed breakfast at a very local place eating our food out of to go containers in the car watching some surfers. Very windy and the place we parked had surf spray dousing us between bites. Hudson is now a huge fan of loco moco, declaring it a “bulk”. On our way to the big Costco run we grabbed some malasadas from a place everyone loves right across the street from Costco. We agree!

The trip blurs together so here is a quick points recap.

Struck out on windsurfer at Hookipa after trying multiple times. We need to figure out a better way to dial in optimal wind and wave conditions.

Sign up for what is called the “snorkel report”. They send out emails every morning explaining the best beach to snorkel at given conditions for the day.

Poke from the local’s grocery store is the best.

Hudson tried spearfishing and came close to getting a prized species. The instructors thought he was really good in the water and already a very competent free diver.

Ono BBQ was fun and unique, although just a one-time deal. You pull up and they bring it to your car. The nicest people even though everything was done through text.

Kaanapali had some epic shore break to womp.

Sad to see the devastation of Lahina after the fires. We hope they rebuild in a way that takes care of the locals, captures the old spirit and spits in the eyes of the big money developers.

We managed Prime rib for Christmas at Kimo’s sister restaurant Leilanis and ate an enormous slice of Hula Pie!

Cindy reconnected with a friend from California that now lives in Maui. Nice folks and fun to hear about island life and what’s involved in leaving the mainland.

Chang’s Beach remains a favorite. Father and daughter had a great snorkel with lots of fish, a vibrant reef and some turtle friends. The family had a nice time floating in the tubes and tumbling in the waves.

The north side beach was a surprise hit with groups of turtles on shore getting some sun. Best time was after 4:00.

Honolua store remains a hit, a well priced lunch

Monkeypods Mai Tai is so overrated. Although we ran into the CEO of Google there so it might just be us. We were kind of schleppy coming right from the beach.

Cindy refuses to drive the one lane road around the west side of the island ever again! Despite that it was beautiful. The kids loved it.

Bringing an inflatable paddle board was a big win for catching waves in front of the condo. Not all that big in the winter but super fun and a great way burn an afternoon.

The whales were in and we were able to see them off in the distance most days. On a whim Andy paddled out to them on the board and sat front row for awhile to watch the show. Mom and baby flapping and splashing about. A great way to spend Christmas. One of the guys at the condo was freaking out and very worried for his safety, going through all the ways this was going to end badly.

Ulalanis for shave ice is so so good. Big lines, brain freezes and sugar at max levels!

We did the crater and caught a perfect day. It was warm all the way to the top, the view was epic with visibility out over the neighboring islands and there wasn’t too much traffic. We stayed for the sunset. Not sure if it was the time of year, but the sun set just behind the observatory.  Kind of ruined the view so not sure that we would do it again, but fun to do once.

Our final night, Christmas night after dinner we were driving home.  We pulled over and caught this beautiful sunset.

For the next trip

Nothing open when you land late with the exception of McDonalds near the airport. Expect a bit of a line in the drive thru.

Bring the paddle board

Don’t over due it with Costco size portions of protein. The team was sick of Hawaiian style chicken and ribs.

A frozen pizza is good to have on hand for those late nights.

Don’t forget to shake the pineapple juice when making pina coladas

Sunset on the crater is just as good a bit lower since you don’t look over the buildings and are ahead of the traffic.

Puerto Vallarta, MX – Couples Trip!

December 2023

Couples trip 2023 to PV to see the sunshine. All our friends remarked that sit seems like a lot when we chose to spend 5 nights at 3 different places. Our launch was aborted halfway up the hill with an under charged car. Swapping cars we were off without a hitch all the way to PV. Cleared customs and onto the next clearance. Andy drew red on the random selector for baggage scanning and Cindy was an absolute no on an Uber after our last fiasco with driver pretending to be our guy!

We arrived just early enough for a drink on the beach under a palapa with what seemed like the best french fries ever since we hadn't ate all day!

Our place, Pinnacle is a luxury high rise condo with sweeping views of the entire town and Bay of Banderas. The highlight was the infinite pool on the roof with a bar.

We loved every minute sitting in floaties, drinks in hand looking out over the bay. Cindy had been craving Panchos Takos since we had last been to PV just over a year ago. For a buzzy place where you sit on the street, pay $30 for 7 tacos, beer, margarita, coke, two waters and get roasted next to the spit its always a 10!

We fell into the 12 day festival / pilgrimage of Guadalupe. This is a procession of people from the outlying areas to cycle through the church and receive blessings. Large groups move through in costumes, performing dances in the street accompanied by floats and drums. Fun to watch and quasi be a part of. Our second day started with a massage at Metamorphosis, another favorite where they fixed a two year neck injury I had from a skiing crash. Brunch was next door at Cafe San Angel. Literally in the heart of Zona Romantico it’s multi-generational family run, dripping with flora and a great place to watch life pass by. The machaca (beef with eggs) was great and don’t forget a side of bacon! From there we went through the Olas Alta Saturday farmer’s market. This is located at a park filled with beautiful mosaic benches. Back to our stunning rooftop pool for drinks and a swim. Great Spotify playlist - Chill Dance Music. For a snack Andy got us takeaway Jorge Hideaway Shrimp Shack. Great name and Jorge was cool, but this one if coming off the Google Maps places to go list. We ate on our patio with a gorgeous view.  Our last night, so it was back up to rooftop bar for drinks and a sunset. Hungry again and finding some motivation we hiked a good way to dinner at Trattoria de Nuovo. The chef was a lovely guy, passionately assembling each dish with detail, the food was great and dessert just meh! Would definitely go again a grab an ice cream on the way home.

Up the next morning for place #2, which was all of a 5 minute Uber ride away. Cindy is ok with Uber in town since we avoid the sketchy airport pickup area. Hyatt Ziva will always be Dreams for us from back when we went with the kids.

It is all about grabbing a palapa and enjoying the secluded beach without so many people and folks trying to sell you every 5 minutes. The food is good but not amazing and the drinks keep coming if you like. We are tame in that regard compared to some of the other guests and tended to pace ourselves. Being here just one night we maximized out two days on the beach and snuck into our favorite restaurant on the property which is set out over the water. Over the years most of the staff has turned over and we run into just a few from the old days. The connections were part of what made it special and things definitely feel more corporate. We missed Izzy for a hat this year. Between him and his dad they have worked this beach for almost 40 years. He always puts a smile on our faces. Hats are whatever you want to pay and we can’t help giving him a bit extra.

After spending the full day on the beach we headed back into town to Vallarta Shores. This was a return to a new favorite from our last couples trip. Right on the beach, very reasonably priced and more authentic feeling then most of the other properties. Walking in the door there is that magical buzz of looking out over the waves.

Dinner was un-memorable and we went to bed excited about our private chef and breakfast on the porch.

No disappointments with a lovely Mexican women rolling in at 9am with an arm load of groceries raring to cook for us. She made a traditional Machaca like we had earlier in the trip and a mound of Arroz con Poll for lunch later in the day. She made sure we had plenty of leftovers. After Breakfast we walked south of the Malecon on a basic trail that ran along the water. We passed lots of big houses and had fun thinking about who and what it was like to live in a mansion. One of these days we are going to come down with a large group and rent one! The rest of our day was spent on the beach under a palapa, taking a siesta, enjoying a few drinks, reading and just relaxing. Our last day was a travel day with a late flight so we managed to enjoy the beach till about 2 before the reality of heading home set in. The only ripple in the day was a call Cindy received from a customs agent that she was in trouble with the law! It turned out to be someone trying to perpetuate  fraud on us, but they were very convincing and had us concerned until we figured out they were up to no good.

PV – Always a great place to visit to escape the yucky Seattle weather, find a little relaxation and disconnect.
