Just the Essentials - What to Pack

February 11, 2019

Since the trip people have asked me what we packed since we visited places with such a wide range of  weather and especially curious when I explain we only had a small carry on and day backpack.

These are my travel essentials:

Day backpack
  • Small zipper bag with ear plugs, lip balm,  gum, hand lotion, roll on lavender oil. See's chocolate lollipops (helps with boredom and chocolate cravings) and Kleenex. Keep this out once you board the plane along with your tablet/book and you shouldn't have to get into your backpack/luggage for the flight.
  • Passport
  • Sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer
  • Travel pillow - still haven't found one I love
  • Eye mask
  • Headphones
  • Backup Battery Pack
  • Cheap Plastic Water Bottle (no big deal if you loose it then)
  • Tablet with movies
  • Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard
  • Scarf keeps me warm
  • Fleece
  • Reading glasses & Sunglasses
  • Chargers and cables
  • Adapter with USB slots (at least 4 - one for each family member)
  • Nice pair of flip flop style shoes (wear to beach, dresses and on the plane)

Carry on Luggage
  • Copies of passports
  • Rain coat
  • Bathing suit
  • Waterproof shoes: wear these on plane to save room in carry on.
  • Medicines
  • 4 t-shirts
  • 1 long sleeve shirt
  • Long underwear (just for Iceland)
  • 2 pairs of shorts
  • 2 skorts
  • 2 pairs of pants-I like jeans and a light weight pair. Great for hot countries when you need to dress modestly and not show your legs.
  • socks, makeup, shampoo/conditioner
Tips

  • Keep makeup and toiletries in a gallon size zip lock bag.  It saves space and weight, also helps with security checks. Keep shampoo and conditioner in a separate bag just in case.
  • Consider putting a change of clothes in your backpack for easy access.  For example, if you are in hot climate and you are wearing shorts, but are arriving at a conservative country you will need to change before landing.  Or from a warm weather country to a cold one.
  • Download Google Maps for the areas you will be in - so you don't need wifi
  • Download Google Translator
  • Get a currency converter app
  • Back pictures up nightly to the cloud in case you loose your phone
  • Download audio books and pod casts for long car/train rides
  • Get a good app for medical help abroad
  • Register with the STEP program through the US Department of State
